North Dakota Fur Takers actively provides education to the general public on the methods and techniques, as well as the harvest or taking of fur and the management impact of these activities.

Fur In Schools

Picture 1 – 4th grade – learning about furbearers that visit or utilize wetlands. They made comparisons and tried to guess what each fur was.
Picture 2 – 4th grade – also learning about wetlands and furbearers, but they first felt the furs, made a guess at animals, then they got to see the fur, make more observations. Talked some also about animal fur and how it differs in winter and tracking.
Picture 3 – 2nd grade – importance of natural predators, like coyotes.
Picture 4 – 2nd grade – talked about habitats of ND and which animals live in each.
Picture 5 – Another 4th grade - learning about furbearers that visit or utilize wetlands. They made comparisons and tried to guess what each fur was.
Picture 6-10 – K – read two books on fox and skunk, shared furs, then the kids made a Venn diagram finding similarities and differences between the animals.
I try to incorporate the furs whenever possible when I do sessions in the school. For instance, next month I plan on using them during a preschool story time session at the public library. Thank you so much for the opportunity to share these with the local students.
